The goal of the Resilience Youth Network is to develop the next generation of leaders in the fields of resilience and climate change adaptation. We recognize that underrepresented groups such as people of color, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and indigenous communities are often not present in resilience-oriented conversations and decision-making processes due to systemic inequities and injustices. We also recognize that low-income people are often members of these same underrepresented groups and are among those most impacted by the effects of climate change. We are committed to promoting equity in the fields of resilience and climate change adaptation by addressing this discrepancy. 

How will we enhance diversity, inclusion, and equity in the fields of resilience and climate change adaptation?

Goal 1

Increase outreach to historically Black colleges and universities, as well as universities with high Latino/a and Native American populations.

Firms and organizations typically recruit from a small subset of universities because their employees come from those same universities. We recognize that talent is everywhere and that our organization and board will benefit from diverse perspectives.

Incorporate conversations about equity and climate change into our events.

All of our events are  interdisciplinary events focused on the intersection of climate change, resilience, and the issues facing marginalized and vulnerable communities such as poverty, housing, and food insecurity.

Empower our members through skill sharing workshops and career networking events.

Our job is not to go into vulnerable communities and tell them how to solve their problems. Instead, we will rely on the rich diversity of our member base to create opportunities for all members to learn valuable skills with which they can empower themselves and their communities.

Amplify the voices of the marginalized.

As part of our engagement initiatives, we work with vulnerable communities to craft socio-technical strategies for adapting to climate change. We use our platform to support and amplify voices that have historically been excluded from land use planning and resilience conversations.
